Jersey City Mayor Discusses Failures of Risk Assessment Program
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop discusses the failures of the risk assessment program that is being used in his city and the state of New Jersey. According to South Plainfield Detective Joe Indano, “Nobody is afraid to commit crimes anymore. They’re not afraid of being arrested, because they know at the end of the day they are going to be arrested and released.” New Jersey State Senator Sandra Cunningham states that the pretrial risk assessment program adopted by New Jersey “… was never designed to put people out on the streets, who were a danger to the community.”
In California, California legislators Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) and Rob Bonta (D-Oakland) have been trying to bring the same pretrial risk assessment program that is failing in New Jersey to California. California cannot make the same mistakes they did in New Jersey by ending monetary bail and replacing it with a disastrous pretrial risk assessment program.
