New Jersey’s Pretrial System Remorse
New Jersey chose to end its monetary bail system on January 1, 2017, and after several questionable pretrial releases, the state is having buyer’s remorse. Topo Padilla, the President of the Golden State Bail Agents Association, warns that following in the footsteps of New Jersey and ending the monetary bail system in California will lead to the same mistakes and tragedies that have plagued New Jersey since it ended its monetary bail system.
What has the end to New Jersey’s monetary bail system caused? Take the example of June Rodgers and Vincent Osby’s son. Christian Phillip Nolan Rodgers, 26, was shot to death in April by a career criminal named Jules Black, who had been picked up on a separate gun charge four days before the murder, and he was automatically released from jail without bail under New Jersey’s recently adopted pretrial system.
California cannot make the same mistakes they did in New Jersey by ending monetary bail.
